Appearance: A pale, slender girl with sleepy eyes and an aura of calm so thick that you could cut it with a knife, sporting a scarf or collared cloak dotted with various and sundry things like small gems, odd herbs,cute little owl charms and arcane devices for whatever task she's working on in the moment. Has short hair styled in what might generously be called a bob - probably because she's done it herself with pruning shears, a hand mirror, and no particular interest in looking fashionable. Personality:
- Observant - From sussing out motivations to predicting reactions to future events, she can be eerily prescient in the right circumstances... usually by connecting the dots of things going unsaid. After all, nobody wants to admit to pissing off a water sprite by accidentally mucking up their stream.
- Collected - Not much bothers her. If it happens, it happens. Not prone to worrying about stuff outside her control as a general rule.
- Pessimistic - Mildly, or at least leaning that way on average. By expecting the worst, you're either right or pleasantly surprised, yes? In either case, making peace with the idea of things going poorly ties in with her innate stoicism.
- Bookworm - Working the weather is hard and can go wrong in many different ways. Plus making deals with a looming hurricane or being able to call down lightning on a sunny day because a thunderhead spirit has a fondness for you is pretty fucking cool, and that only happens if you study dusty old books until your brain leaks out of your ears. Burning the proverbial candle at both ends is largely responsible for both her startling depth of knowledge as well as her permanently drowsy disposition.
- Ambitious - Might come as a bit of a surprise at first glance! Mayou studies and works exceptionally hard to push her limits as far as possible, which means she takes painstaking care to ensure every tiny detail is accounted for before attempting something that might be ever so slightly out of her league as a novice. To fail is normal and even understandable, but to fail spectacularly and light stuff on fire is not. Suffice it to say she has very high standards for herself.
- Detached - Definitely unintentional, but Mayou is a tad standoffish around new acquaintances. Not shy - selective. Picky. Kind of like a cat, really, avoiding bustling city centers and loud, boisterous people like the plague if given the choice. Her flavor of friendship is quiet but warm, making her affection known in small, unassuming gestures without openly staking a claim on someone's space or time.
Powers/Abilities:
- Deal Broker - For a small fee, she can negotiate terms with a troublesome spirit that inhabits your place of business and/or living quarters. A raging river might be pacified with a gift (the contents depending on the tastes of the individual spirit) for example. These nature beings don't 'speak' a language so much as communicate purely through commerce and the exchange of favors.
- Weather Manipulation - Simple things like staying dry in the rain or redirecting strong winds to leave a pocket of still air that's precisely the caster's size. Accomplished green magic practitioners are known for feats like throwing lightning, snuffing out fires, creating convincing illusions with heat mirages, targeted microbursts, or sheets of rain dense enough to snap trees and flatten buildings. Needless to say all of these major spells are far beyond Mayou's abilities as of yet.
- Reduced Aging - A consequence of spending a lot of time balancing on the knife edge delineating the mundane from the spirit realm. Along with a strong preference for quiet solitude in wild corners of the world, green witches tend to age more slowly due to the constant saturation of raw nature magic clinging to them like a second skin. The older the witch, the more powerful this otherworldly aura becomes, often with the individual in question exhibiting traits usually attributed to the fey.
- Hexes and Curses - A school of magic she rarely involves herself in considering it's just unpleasant business all around, but still a necessary evil to reinforce boundaries. Her curses manifest in bad luck like sudden thunderstorms on the day of your much anticipated outdoor wedding. Passive aggressiveness weather witch style!
- Gourmet - A great cook! Bribing spirits with goods sourced from exotic ingredients is a perfectly viable bargaining strategy, you know.
- Familiars - Mischievous little creatures with a gift for shapeshifting and mimicry. While it's common for a witch or wizard to have one specific favourite they bond with, endearing oneself to the local 'critter community' regardless of species opens up avenues for sending far-ranging messages as well as establishing an early warning system for unwanted visitors. Mayou in particular has taken a liking to owls.
Weaknesses:
- Fragile - Just a regular human being for the most part, since magic skill and knowledge takes time to accumulate. If the blowback from a hex or deal gone wrong is bad enough she'll have to deal with injuries accordingly and hope for the best. Spending the lion's share of her time in scholarly pursuits means Mayou doesn't have an excess of muscle to brute force her way out of a bad situation either, alas.
- Apprentice - Not powerful enough to bring down a typhoon by herself, nor experienced enough to haggle with entities capable of doing so. Pretty low on the totem pole as far as the witch hierarchy goes.
- Borrowed Power - The greatest workings of green magic rely heavily on the cooperation of strong-willed elementals. While a stone or wood spirit can usually be trusted to stay the course when bound in a long lasting pact, fire and wind spirits are much more dangerous with their mercurial shifts in mood and/or capricious tendencies in general! Delicate handling is mandatory in these partnerships to ensure day-to-day business isn't upended in a fit of pique. In the end, none of the strength in green magic is truly, permanently yours; everything borrowed must one day be returned.
